McKenzie Brewing RIMS Brewing
Kettle

For the boil kettle, I figured I needed :

  • top cut off
  • holes cut around 3/4 of the bottom ring to vent hot gases during boiling from the propane burner
  • 1/2" NPT fitting with pickup for draining the wort out

Once I had it designed, I ran the keg out to Stainless Design, on Walnut Street in New Albany, Ohio.  They charged me $240 to do the custom work for the Mash Tun, more than I expected, but, when I look at the quality of the work, its worth it.  All welds are food grade and were done under an inert gas blanket, so there are no pockets or pits for nasties to build up.

Picture Description
The boil kettle showing the vent holes to allow the gases from the propane burner to easily vent around the bottom of the kettle.
Inside the boil kettle, showing the drain tube.  It is set so that it leaves about 1.25" of wort in the bottom of the kettle when drained, leaving behind hot break.
