Mash Tun

For details on where I got the sankey keg, check the HLT link!

Next, I had to figure what I wanted done to the sankey keg.  I figured I needed :

  • top cut off
  • 1/2" NPT fitting with pickup for draining the hot liquor out
  • a false bottom

Once I had it designed, I ran the keg out to Stainless Design, on Walnut Street in New Albany, Ohio.  He had some great perforated material that they made the false bottom out of, see the pictures below.  They charged me $240 to do the custom work for the Mash Tun, more than I expected, but, when I look at the quality of the work, its worth it.  All welds are food grade and were done under an inert gas blanket, so there are no pockets or pits for nasties to build up.

Picture Description
Mash tun showing the welded coupling, nipple and stainless ball valve
Showing the top cutout and the custom built removable two part screen in place at the bottom of the tun.
Closer view of the custom built screen, showing how small the perforations are and how the two pieces bolt together using wing nuts, all stainless.
Close up view of the supporting ring that holds the false bottom up off the pickup tube.  The screen is a perfect fit inside the keg, the middle just needed support, thus the ring.  The gap is to allow the pickup tube access to the bottom of the keg.
A view of the mash tun with the support ring installed, showing the pickup tube.
The cutout piece of keg converted into a lid by tacking four tabs at each pole.
This is my custom built sparge sprayer.  Built from 1/2" copper tube, t's and right angles.  Unfortunately I drilled too many holes to allow for a good spray, but it does ok.  Note the quick disconnects that allow me to connect it quickly between the HLT or the pump used to circulate the wort.
